Our Members

We are delighted that Seacole member Delroy has received this prestigious award. In his own words:

'It is a recognition that speaks to the highest aspirations – that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter and can bend history in the direction of kindness to fellow humans, especially those less fortunate.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the unrecognised communities and those within them whose quiet acts of courage and fierce dedication inspire even the most hardened cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women – some known, some obscure to all but those they help – to be far more deserving of this honour than I.

I do not have definitive solutions to the daily challenges of those less fortunate. What I do know is that meeting these challenges will require the same vision, hard work, and persistence of all of us who acted so boldly decades ago. It will require us to think in new ways about the notions of social exclusion.  We must begin however by acknowledging the hard truth: We will not eradicate societal poverty and disadvantage if we continue to act individually or in concert – thus “turning a blind” eye."
