About the Organisation
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is seeking a highly experienced and values-driven individual to join its Board as a Non-Executive Director (NED) and Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee.
This is a pivotal leadership role within one of England’s largest and most respected acute teaching hospitals. With a turnover of £1.5 billion and a workforce of over 13,000, UHS delivers hospital services to 1.9 million people in southern Hampshire and specialist services to nearly 4 million across central southern England and the Channel Islands. The Trust is a designated major trauma centre and home to Southampton Children’s Hospital—one of the UK’s top three paediatric centres. UHS is nationally recognised for its research excellence, innovation, and strong partnerships with the University of Southampton, NIHR, and other prestigious institutions. It is also a leader in sustainability, having invested significantly in decarbonisation and digital infrastructure.
About the role
As a NED, you will work collaboratively with fellow Board members to shape the Trust’s strategic direction, ensure high standards of care and performance, and uphold the values of public service. In your capacity as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee, you will provide oversight of the Trust’s financial reporting, risk management, and internal control systems. You will ensure that governance arrangements are robust and transparent, and that the Trust meets its statutory and regulatory obligations.
You will help ensure that the Trust remains accountable to its patients, staff, and wider community and act as a key link between the Board and the wider community.
You will bring a recognised accountancy qualification and the credibility to lead on matters of financial stewardship, risk, and assurance. However, your impact will extend far beyond finance—you will contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust, provide constructive challenge to the executive team, and help ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of patients and the wider community. This role calls for sound judgement, integrity, and a deep commitment to public service values. They are particularly keen to hear from candidates who champion inclusion, transparency, and patient-focused care, and who can bring diverse perspectives to their Board.
They welcome applications from candidates with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, particularly those who reflect the communities they serve.
